Debt Nearly Affects Everyone

Nobody likes to talk about debt, but it affects nearly everyone whether you are young, old, rich or poor.  But, analyzing and talking about your financial situation is critical in order to make long-term financial changes in your life.  One of your first steps to getting yourself out of debt is to know how you got there in the first place.

Make A List

After you have asked yourself how you got into debt, make two lists. The first list is money you owe, i.e. your debts. The second list is your expenditures, i.e. money you spend. Now compare them. Things to look for are:
  • Trips to fast food, restaurants, and specialty coffee shops.
  • Doctors and medical emergencies.
  • Divorce
  • Home repairs

Evaluate

Now that you have taken a look at your two lists, you need to evaluate where you are spending your money.  Use the list to gain insight into your personal spending habits.  Now that you understand your relationship with money, you can move forward. The key to getting out of debt is to understand how you got there in the first place and then making a plan to get out.
